Shad Olson Reports: Saving the U.S.S. OrleckFor some American families, a tradition of military service is a generational affair and a source of deep familial pride. In September, during a visit to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, it was my honor to meet and interview Bob Orleck, a nephew of World War II tugboat commander, Lt. Joseph Orleck and namesake of the naval destroyer, the U.S.S. Orleck. Bob Orleck has invested his life to preserve the ship that immortalized his uncle’s heroism and continues to embody the same spirit of sacrifice exhibited by his Uncle Joe as part of ‘Operation Avalanche,’ that would secure an allied foothold in Italy during the Battle of Salerno in 1943. A Veteran’s Day tribute, only on NewsCenter1.
